Somewhere A Lady Cries
She stares at the face in the mirror.
It looks like someone she’s always known,
A girl that she vaguely remembers from somewhere long time ago.
But all of the changes she’s been through have deepened the lines in her face.
And through the laughter and tears of those long lonely years
Another soul has taken her place.
And she’s really a sad girl but she hides it well.
She won’t let you in there. It’s a private Hell.
With her face painted up for the evenin’,
In a dress that fits just a little too tight,
She’s going out dancing believin’ she’ll meet somebody special tonight.
But all of the eyes that she sees there seem hollow with nothin’ inside
An’ the fast shiny cars and all those loud lonely bars
Offer no place for a lady to hide.
Yeh, she’s a lady. She’s not a dancer.
She’s heard all the questions. She wants just one answer.
As the last song dies down for the evenin’
She stands up to take herself home.
Ignoring one last invitation she walks down the sidewalks alone.
The clouds in her soul slowly forming put tears in her soft amber eyes
And alone in the gloom of that dark empty room
She finally breaks down and she cries,
“Heavenly Father hear me from somewhere above.
Father if your near me send me someone to love.”
Then she wipes off the mask that she’s been wearing.
She looks again at the face in the glass.
She abandons her hopes for tomorrow. She embraces those memories long past.
Her mind seems to swim in confusion. Its a world that’s just not what it seems
And she places her head on that soft feather bed
And she eagerly enters her dreams
Where she climbs to the crest of the mountain and she looks to the distant shore.
She walks to the end of the hallway and she opens a different door.
She sees in the eyes of a stranger someone she’s always known
And as she’s handed the keys, she drops to her knees
And she says, “My God, am I finally home?”
And a sad soul smiles as the pain all dies.
Somewhere a young girl laughs and a lady cries.
Somewhere a young girl laughs and a lady cries.

NOTES: I wrote this song in 1986 for someone that was very special to me. It's about depression and eventual suicide.
