The Consciousness Of People

Let me take you from The Consciousness of People,

Far beyond the realms of disbelief.

Let me show you the bell ringer in the steeple,

How his body is bent from years of grief.

But you don’t feel it.   No, no, no, no, you don’t feel it.

Let me show you the hungry hobo out on the highway, hey,

As he listens to the freight train whistle moan.

Let me show you all the missiles in your skyways

And the sad eyed poet that weeps alone.

An’ you don’t feel it?   No, no, no, no, you don’t feel it.

Let me show you the soul within the sailor

As he gazes wistfully to sea.

Let me show you all the anguish of the jailor.

He knows he holds the key to set men free.

An’ don’t you feel it?  No, no, no, no, you don’t feel it.

Let me show you all the beauty of the valleys

Where the bubbling, splashing mountain streams run free.

Then let me show you all the drunkards in your alleys

As they vomit up the dreams they thought could be.

Don’t you feel it?  No, no, no, no, you don’t feel it.

Come and walk with me through sorrow and through sadness.

See the crippled and the maimed from a world of war

And then come gaze into the universe’s vastness

And tell me, “What is all this killin’ for

Or don’t you feel it?  No, no, no, no, you don’t feel it.

Let me take you down the dusty road of hardships

Where the hungry eyes of babies show their pain.

Let me read to you from old, discarded transcripts

How the ones that left us here are gonna come again.

Hey, don’t you feel it?  No, no, no, no, you don’t feel it.

So let me bow my head down softly as I leave you.

My boots are firmly planted down this road.

All those petty games you’re playin’ I can see through.

If you don’t unlock your dreams they will explode.

And don’t you feel it?  No, no, no, no, you don’t feel it.  No, no.

NOTES:  I wrote this song in 1968.  Obviously I had higher ideals back then.  The song is about my perception at the time that people were getting a little too jaded, too self-absorbed to observe, understand, and empathize with the not-so-great plight of others around them.  Now, a return to the conditions in the world back then would be a significant improvement.
